How much does critical illness cover cost?

You can buy cover in units of £10,000. The minimum level of cover is £10,000, with a maximum level of 5 x your annual salary (up to a maximum of £500,000). Your partner/spouse can choose cover equal to or less than your cover (up to a maximum of £250,000).
Premiums are based on your age at the start of each policy year and the amount of cover you select. As you get older you will move into a different premium age band and the cost of your cover will usually increase.
Unum usually review the premium rates every 2 years.

How do I make a claim?
Email MyBenefits@ntu.ac.uk as soon as possible in the event of a diagnosis, ideally within 21 days, and we will obtain a claim form on your behalf. The provider, Unum, will not process claims received more than 90 days after the event/diagnosis.
Are my children covered?
All children, including adopted and step-children, aged 6 months to 18 years are covered automatically at no additional cost.
Can I cancel or amend my cover?
Complete and submit a benefit selection form to cancel or amend your critical illness insurance. Due to the nature of this benefit, cancellation or amendment is only possible if you experience a life event (examples below), or at the end of the policy year during the annual enrolment window in September.
Life events include:
- Birth or adoption of child
- Marriage or civil partnership
- Divorce or dissolution of civil partnership
- Death of spouse, partner, or dependent child
What happens if I leave before the end of the benefit year?
Your cover will remain in place until the last day of the month in which you leave.

You can select either of the following membership types for critical illness cover:
- employee only
- employee and spouse/partner
Cover levels
- You can choose cover in multiples of £10,000
- If a fixed amount of over £250,000 is chosen, benefits will be limited to
a maximum of 5x each member’s salary. - There is an overall maximum benefit limit of £500,000 for each member.
- Each of a member’s children is covered for a benefit of 25% of the member’s benefit up to a maximum of £25,000
- The maximum benefit that can be provided for spouses or partners is the lower of:

£250,000
