By selecting this benefit, you can spread the cost of your bicycle and equipment, and you won’t pay any tax or National Insurance on the deductions.
To administer the cycle-to-work scheme we work alongside a third party, please see their privacy notice here.
With bikes and equipment in high demand, we encourage you to ensure your chosen bike is available before applying for a certificate.
What can I get through the Cycle to Work scheme?
You can get whatever bike, safety, or security equipment you need to keep you in the saddle and cycle commuting regularly. Including any type of bike, e-bike or cycle with at least 2 wheels.
There are 3 package types to choose from, click here to jump to more information on them.
Please note that only safety and security equipment are considered eligible for inclusion in this benefit. Requests will only be processed for eligible equipment. Requests including items which are neither cycles, safety or security equipment will be denied, and you will need to submit another application with only the eligible items.
How long does it take to get my certificate?
The average time between application and receipt of the certificate is 12 calendar days. This is due to equipment checks, contractual checks, and invoicing between Cyclescheme and NTU. Due to this timing, we recommend you speak to your cycle store to see if your chosen bike can be held for you. You will receive your certificate by email.
What equipment can I get under the Cycle to Work scheme?
There is a list of generally accepted equipment on the Government website here; more information can also be found on the Cyclesheme site here.
If you are purchasing equipment, we will check with you about what items you are looking to purchase. You can email MyBenefits@ntu.ac.uk with a list of your intended equipment when you apply to speed up your application.
How can I find out more information on the scheme?
Read more in the FAQs below, access further information on the Cyclescheme website, or join an upcoming webinar to learn more about how the scheme works and ask questions before you apply.
How much can I spend on a bike and accessories?
You can select a cycle to work package (bike and accessories) up to the maximum amount of £3,500.
It is not possible to add additional funds to this amount.
What happens if my cycle to work package price and my certificate value do not match?
If your bike and/or accessories cost less than the voucher value:
It is not compulsory to spend the full value of your eCertificate, but spending less than the value of the eCertificate is not advised as your overall package price and monthly Hire Agreement costs will not be reduced.
Cyclescheme recommends that all participants redeem the full value of their eCertificates at the point of redemption, as it's essentially a 'use it or lose it' scenario.
If you need to change the value on your eCertificate you can cancel your original request and reapply.
If your bike and/or accessories cost more than the voucher value:
You cannot contribute personally towards the cost. The terms of the Scheme are that the eCetificate must be used to purchase the bike and equipment outright.
If you need to change the value on your eCertificate you can cancel your original request and reapply.
How do I change the value of my certificate?
You can cancel your original request and reapply via the Cyclescheme site.
Changing your value can take a little time as NTU will need to redo checks and organise funding for your new request. If you do not wish to delay your application at all, you may wish to consider retaining your current eCertificate and getting a different bike and/or accessories that match its current value.
How are payments made?
The Hire Agreement you sign will be repaid via a salary sacrifice arrangement over 12 months.
These repayments will be deducted directly from your gross salary (the amount before any other deductions are made). This effectively reduces your overall pay for tax and National Insurance (NI) purposes and means that you will pay less tax and NI during the hire period.
For more information on repayments, see the Cyclescheme FAQs
